UNRAVELING THE TAPESTRY: UNDERSTANDING ATHLETES' DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA
Main Article Content
Abstract
Talent Development (TD) in the context of Nigerian athletes presents a distinctive landscape characterized by intricate socio-cultural barriers, as highlighted by Elumaro et al. (2016). In contrast to counterparts in diverse cultures, Nigerian athletes encounter unique challenges that significantly impede the process of talent development. This study delves into the profound revelations made by Elumaro et al. (2016) and investigates the multifaceted socio-cultural barriers hindering sports development in Nigeria. The examination of the TD landscape in Nigeria reveals a complex interplay of factors that pose challenges for athletes aspiring to develop their talents. Previous research by Martindale et al. (2007) emphasized the necessity of a comprehensive talent development environment, advocating for a network of consistent and coherent support from various stakeholders. These stakeholders encompass parents, coaches, teachers, siblings, and friends, each playing a crucial role in fostering an effective talent development framework. Nigerian athletes, however, face a distinctive set of hurdles, surpassing those encountered by their counterparts in other cultures. The socio-cultural barriers identified by Elumaro et al. (2016) encompass a myriad of challenges, ranging from societal expectations and norms to familial and peer influences. Understanding and navigating these barriers become imperative for successful talent development in the Nigerian sporting context. This study critically examines the implications of these socio-cultural barriers on the talent development trajectory of Nigerian athletes. By shedding light on the unique challenges faced by athletes in Nigeria, the research aims to contribute to the development of targeted interventions and strategies. Furthermore, it seeks to foster a deeper understanding of the underlying dynamics that shape the TD landscape in the Nigerian context.
