Abstract

The study examined Occupational Health and Safety as a tool for Workplace Productivity in the Emene Industrial Area of Enugu State. The specific objectives are to explore the effect of human resource development on employee satisfaction, evaluate the effect of hazard control on the work environment in the Emene industrial area of Enugu State. This study adopts a descriptive survey research design. Primary data was collected using structured questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaires were designed using A 5-point Likert scale. The population of this study comprises employees and management staff from organisations within the Emene industrial area of Enugu State. The total population of this study is 1694, while the sample size is 324. The sample size for this study was determined using Taro Yamane’s formula. Correlation Analysis was used to determine the strength and direction of the relationship between OHS practices and workplace productivity. Data analysis was carried out using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS 29.0) software. The result revealed that Human resource development has a significant positive effect on employee satisfaction with the p-value (237.384, <0.001); Hazard control has a significant positive effect on the work environment with the p-value (240.832, <0.001) in the Emene industrial area of Enugu State. In conclusion, the research underscores that Occupational Health and Safety is not merely a regulatory obligation but a strategic tool for enhancing workplace productivity in the Emene industrial area. The study recommends, among others, that organisations should prioritise HRD initiatives that foster employee skills and knowledge. Regular workshops, seminars, and mentorship programs can enhance employee satisfaction and engagement. Encourage a culture of continuous learning to equip employees with the skills necessary for adapting to changing workplace demands
